John's Background Switcher For Mac

Jun 4, 2014 - John's Background Switcher for Mac periodically changes your Mac's desktop picture using photos from a variety of sources including those on. If you’re having a tough day, just take a look at your desktop and John’s Background Switcher will get you through it! Main features include: Show single photos or a variety of randomly generated beautiful montages on your desktop; Choose photos from folders on your Mac, iPhoto albums and events or from the new Photos app.

John's Background Switcher puts beautiful full-screen photos and stunning montages on your desktop. Choose the photos from your own collection on your Mac or websites like Flickr, InterfaceLIFT, Unsplash, Instagram, Pixabay, SmugMug, Vladstudio, Google Photos and many more besides.

You'll never know what's coming next - maybe photos from a recent holiday, landscapes from far and distant lands, pictures of small kittens or equally small dogs. If you're having a tough day, just take a look at your desktop and John's Background Switcher will get you through it! This version is all about supporting macOS Mojave and fixing a few bugs along the way.

JBS now fully supports macOS Mojave including dark mode. You can now choose from an Unsplash user's liked photos (including your own if you have an Unsplash account). Instagram would sometimes fail to authenticate - this has now been fixed. Tumblr feeds were broken in the EU and now JBS is able to parse them again. Fixed a bug where a change to the Vladstudio API stopped JBS from working. A few other minor bug fixes and performance enhancements (really).

As always, if you encounter any problems or have any suggestions, please let me know!. 2.5.4 May 18, 2018. This version removes Facebook integration following changes to Facebook's API terms and conditions (which means apps like JBS would have to be associated with a verified business rather than just regular people like me). It also updates SmugMug integration to the latest version as the old endpoint is being switched off (but does mean for the time being site and album passwords have been removed, only an issue if you're looking at other user's protected albums).

It also fixes a couple of bugs, too trivial to even mention! (That's my version of 'bug fixes and performance improvements'). If you have any problems, please let me know so I can fix them!. 2.5 May 2, 2018. This version fixes a few bugs, polishes a few icons and unfortunately removes 500px integration entirely (since 500px are about to switch off API access to all apps) - a sad day.

The full details follow:. The RSS feed functionality now supports ArtStation feeds. Corrected a photo collage 'divide by zero' error when using large collage sizes on a small screen.

When you went to view a Pixabay photo you'd get a 404 error page. Now you'll go to the actual photo page. The blur montage option wasn't always working and when it was it was showing artefacts in the corners and edges of the screen. Unfortunately 500px are switching off their API which means apps like JBS can no longer have them as a photo source. So I've had to remove it entirely.

Whenever JBS shows an Unsplash photo JBS now tells Unsplash (which is a condition of using their API for stats purposes). 2.4.7 Feb 1, 2018. This version fixes a bug in 2.4 that stops JBS from switching for a few users - D'Oh!

- and includes all the rest of the 2.4 features as follows. The main highlight is Google Photos integration, improved Unsplash integration and a bunch of bug fixes and performance improvements. The full list is as follows:. Google Photos integration - choose from your albums. Note that the API Google have provided can be pretty slow and I can only reliably get photos from albums (so not from all your Google Photos). If you want it to be faster or more reliable and you know someone in Google, feel free to ask them to improve things! If you want it to be faster or more reliable and you know someone in Google, feel free to ask them to improve things! This version includes OneDrive (personal) integration (yay!) and updates Dropbox integration to use their new API which means you'll need to re-authorize with Dropbox from the 'Accounts' tab (they're deprecating their old API in June so I figured I'd sort it out now ahead of time). I've also fixed a few annoying bugs (a couple of crashes and one hang when connected to a Thunderbolt display). And finally I've redesigned the app icon from the ground up!

What do you mean it looks exactly the same?! Ok, I've tweaked it a little bit by spending many hours poring over pixels.

If you like JBS then please leave a nice review! However if you find a bug or have an idea to make JBS better, follow the support link and let me know so I can help you out. If you don't report problems directly to me then it makes fixing them a lot more difficult!. 2.2 Nov 10, 2016.

This version adds support for Photos on macOS Sierra, adds a couple of cool photo effects and fixes a few bugs. And in detail:. That's right, Photos integration now works on macOS Sierra.

You can now choose to 'Blur background pictures' on the Montages page of the preferences so postcard and polaroid piles will use blurred background pictures. Sometimes less detail is more!. You can now make your background pictures punchier by choosing 'Saturate' for the wallpaper effect or for the postcard / polaroid pile. The polaroid and postcard 'Background effect' now only appears when it makes sense to (for example, it doesn't apply to the cork background so it's confusing to see it there). When you chose 'Random background picture, colour or effect' for the postcard background and had previously chosen 'a random picture from this folder' then JBS would ignore that folder.

Now it won't. Basically, more randomness = more fun!. Unfortunately PNGs weren't being shown if you had only one picture per monitor. This has now been corrected!. If you used a large montage tile size with SmugMug photos on a large screen you'd often see pixellated images. This has now been fixed - no more blur!.

Fixed a crash when authenticating with Dropbox and the token returned has timed out. If you like JBS then please leave a nice review - if nothing else it'll make my day! But if you find a bug or have an idea to make JBS better, follow the support link and let me know (that'll make my day too). If you don't report problems directly to me then I won't be able to fix them!. 2.0.6 Jul 15, 2016. Whoa, those new versions of JBS keep coming out thick and fast! Since Apple's approval process is super-fast now I've no reason to hold back when a bug that impacts a lot of people can be quickly fixed, so here's another one (hopefully there won't be any more and the next update will focus on cool new features):.

In the large under-the-covers changes for version 2.0 I managed to break local picture auto-rotation having only just got it working. Now it's fixed again (so no more upside down photos on your desktop, unless you intentionally took some).

But if you find a bug or have an idea to make JBS better, follow the support link and let me know (that'll make my day too). If you don't report problems directly to me then I won't be able to fix them!. 2.0.5 Jul 11, 2016.

This version contains a single fix whereby if the settings file JBS uses became corrupt then JBS would fail to start. I only had one report of this problem so whoever it was, here's the fix (and do let me know if you continue to have any problems)! If you like JBS then please leave a nice review - if nothing else it'll make my day! But if you find a bug or have an idea to make JBS better, follow the support link and let me know (that'll make my day too). If you don't report problems directly to me then I won't be able to fix them!. 2.0.4 Jul 5, 2016.

Version 2.0 contains a massive amount of changes under the covers to make JBS vastly more stable (if not, please let me know), quicker to start up and use a lot less memory. You'll have to trust me on this as it doesn't look much different on the surface! It also includes:. You can now choose a crumpled paper background effect for postcard and polaroid piles. I've also improved the resolution of the existing ones for maximum sharpness!. There's now a 'Share' menu so you can send your backgrounds to Facebook, Twitter, Notes, etc. If you were using a montage background with InterfaceLift photos on a retina display then sometimes the quality wouldn't quite be sharp enough.

Now the photos should be as sharp as you'd expect!. Postcards or Polaroids would sometimes fail to appear leaving blank spaces on the desktop.

This has now been fixed. In some rare circumstances JBS wouldn't be able to get photos from the Mac Photos app. Dropbox integration now uses OAuth2 rather than OAuth1. You shouldn't notice any difference however. Fixed a problem where some local photos would be shown pixellated on OS X Mavericks (this is the reason for version 2.0.4 in case you were wondering).

Several other minor fixes that don't really deserve more than a quick mention like this. If you like JBS then please leave a nice review - if nothing else it'll make my day! If you don't report problems directly to me then I won't be able to fix them!. 1.5 May 26, 2016. You can now add photos from the awesome photo site Unsplash!

You can choose from featured, popular or newest photos along with searching for particular photos. If there's any other options you'd like for Unsplash, let me know!. Choose photos from a specific folder to use as the postcard and polaroid backgrounds - just look at the Montages tab.

Now you can hide the JBS from the menu bar and if you launch JBS when it's already running it'll show the preferences window (so you can change your options and show the menu again if you like). Instagram no longer allows 3rd party applications to see your feed or search for photos - it will only allow access to your own photos, so JBS has followed suit. Previously locally sourced photos that required auto-rotating would end up the wrong way round when JBS showed them. Now JBS rotates them correctly. On very rare occasions JBS could crash when OS X denied access to folders JBS, this is now fixed. If you like JBS then please leave a nice review - if nothing else it'll make my day! But if you find a bug or have an idea to make JBS better, follow the support link and let me know (that'll make my day too).

If you don't report problems directly to me then I won't be able to fix them!. 1.4.8 Apr 16, 2016. Fixes a problem where sometimes you'd get random photos back from 500px when you chose a specific category.

Corrects various 'Application Transport Security' errors where JBS couldn't access photos from non-HTTPS sites. Also contains all the new features and fixes included in version 1.4 (it's a long list). If you like JBS then please leave a nice review - if nothing else it'll make my day! But if you find a bug or have an idea to make JBS better, follow the support link and let me know (that'll make my day too). 1.4 Feb 19, 2016.

You can now use Pinterest as a photo source by displaying your pins, liked pins, pins from your boards and pins from boards you follow. You can now select photos from your or any Flickr user's Galleries. About time too!. Click 'Clear Background' on the menu to clear the background - handy when you're about to show the boss something important and there's a random cat picture on your desktop.

Decide how much you want to offset the picture info from the edge of the screen. No more losing the title under the dock!. Add the URL from a DeviantArt gallery or user directly as an RSS Feed to JBS to choose from the relevant public photos. JBS now chooses from twice as many InterfaceLift photos as before.

This means twice as many awesome photos to choose from!. Some full screen Flickr photos weren't correctly rotated. Now they are - no more looking at your screen with your head at an angle!. Fixed duplicate SmugMug album titles causing JBS to pick the wrong album than the one selected.

You can now add the Bing photo of the day feed to the RSS feeds section. Or add this short link:. Spruced up some of the icons with a dash of retina imagery. Various bug fixes and improvements to general stability. If you like JBS then please leave a nice review - if nothing else it'll make my day!

But if you find a bug or have an idea to make JBS better, follow the support link and let me know (that'll make my day too). 1.3 Jun 5, 2015. You can now choose from albums in the awesome new Photos app (if you're running the latest version of OS X). Since Photos is brand new, if you find any problems then please let me know about it from the support link so I can fix it!.

JBS now supports 500px as a native image source now that they've changed their API to allow full size image downloads (which was why it wasn't included previously in case you were wondering). When you delete picture sets you're now asked if you're really sure you want to. No more accidents!. Due to API changes by Facebook it's no longer possible for JBS to show you photos from your friends.

Now you can only choose from your own photos or those you've been tagged in. On rare occasions JBS could crash when resuming from sleep after choosing an iPhoto album. This has now been corrected. When authenticating with Instagram an error had recently started showing up. This has now been corrected.

Fixed a crash when failing to find an iPhoto library when there is no user Pictures folder. If you added a folder of pictures to JBS that contained a sub-folder that was a symbolic link to a folder elsewhere, that could cause JBS to not find any pictures. This rather confusing scenario has now been fixed.

Background Switcher Windows 10

Fixed a long standing random crash when generating montages. I hate random crashes.

Now there's a little less hate in the world. If your hard disk was out of space and you were particularly unlucky JBS would crash. Now it no longer will. Although it won't do anything about your luck I'm afraid. Corrected a crash when choosing from a new SmugMug photo album, again if you were unlucky.

A few other minor fixes too small and tedious to list. If you think JBS rocks then please leave a nice review - if nothing else it'll make my day! But if you find a bug or have an idea to make JBS better, follow the support link and let me know (that'll make my day too). 1.2 Feb 9, 2015. Added support for retina displays (for super-sharp backgrounds from sources with large enough photos).

Added InterfaceLIFT as a photo source (nothing but high resolution, beautiful photos). You can choose to see new or interesting photos from appropriate Flickr photo sets. Added support for 500px non-MediaRSS photo feeds. You can now revoke Flickr authentication and go back to anonymous mode Also fixed are the following bugs:. If you added a folder outside of Pictures then after a restart JBS wouldn't be able to find any pictures.

Just add the folder once more and it'll never happen again!. Some Facebook sets returned no photos, now they do. Smugmug sometimes timed out when getting photos, now JBS waits a little longer. Saved backgrounds now use the picture title rather than Untitled.jpg. Information text would only appear on one screen - now should appear on all. Various crashes (like running out of disk space) have now been corrected If you find a bug or have an idea to make JBS better, follow the support link and let me know!.

1.1.1 Nov 4, 2014. TMeza02, JBS is simply the best wallpaper app!. Great Customization. Plenty of Service Integrations. Excellent Customer Service I am so happy with this simple app and have been using it for years. It works the way you want it, then you forget about it.

That is the highest praise I can give it. What more could you ask for in a wallpaper app?

But the app itself isn’t the only reason I give it five stars, John really cares about this product and listens to customers complaints and suggestions to improve the app. TMeza02, JBS is simply the best wallpaper app!. But constantly freezes and theres no way to force restart it. If this app was free I wouldent complain but for $8.99 I expect it to work and it dosent 50% of the time. This app would get 5 stars if it worked properly. Developer Response, Drop me an email to john@johnsadventures.com and I'm sure we can figure out what's happening.

It absolutely shouldn't exhibit that behaviour so if there's a problem I'd love to fix it or alternatively identify what's causing it on your machine. I have had no other reports of hanging in the last 4 years so it's a first! Niziugyfyighohio0, freezes constantly Great Idea, Great Choices in app for changing your background.
